Introduction to Bamboo
Bamboo is a fast-growing, tall, and perennial grass originating from Asia. Bamboo can reach heights between 0.5 to 20 metres. While bamboo can add an aesthetic appeal and serve as a fast-growing privacy screen, it can also become highly invasive, forming dense stands that exclude native species and spread rapidly.
The Two Types of Bamboo
Bamboo is generally classified into two categories: runners and clumpers.
Running Bamboo: This type spreads aggressively through its rhizomes, similar to running grass like Kikuyu and Twitch grass. Running bamboo can extend over 100 metres from the mother plant in a short time, making it difficult to control.
Clumping Bamboo: In contrast, clumping bamboo grows in a more contained manner, akin to tussock grass, and is easier to manage.
Impact of Bamboo in New Zealand
In Auckland, certain bamboo species are considered invasive pests under the Regional Pest Management Plan (RPMP). These species, particularly the running types, are banned due to their ability to form dense thickets that exclude native flora, reduce plant diversity, and alter animal habitats. Bamboo can impede access to natural areas and spread through vegetative means or human-mediated dispersal, such as the dumping of garden waste.
Legal Restrictions
To protect the environment, the Auckland Council has imposed restrictions on certain bamboo species:
From 1 September 2021, it is prohibited to breed, distribute, release, or sell specified bamboo species within Auckland.
Planting these bamboo species is only allowed if transferring an existing plant within the same property.
If directed by an authorised person, any banned bamboo species planted in breach of these rules must be destroyed by the property occupier.
Bamboo Removal Services in Auckland
Complete Bamboo Removal: At Urban Arborists, we offer comprehensive bamboo removal services across Auckland. Due to bamboo's complex root system and rapid growth, removing it can be challenging without professional help. Our team uses specialist equipment, including winch-assisted wood chippers and stump grinders, to tackle bamboo of any size.
Root Barrier Installation: To prevent the spread of bamboo, we can install root barriers that stop traversing roots. This is a crucial step in ensuring that bamboo does not re-establish itself.
Waste Removal: As with all our services, we ensure that all removed bamboo is taken away, leaving your space clean and tidy. We offer non-landfill waste disposal options to minimise environmental impact.
Pruning and Maintenance: For those who wish to keep bamboo as a hedge or screen, we provide pruning and trimming services to maintain its appearance without allowing it to become invasive.
Why Choose Professional Bamboo Removal?
Bamboo can be incredibly frustrating to remove on your own due to its resilient nature and extensive root system. If not managed properly, bamboo can quickly regrow, requiring continuous effort to control. Professional removal ensures that the bamboo is thoroughly eradicated, reducing the risk of it returning and allowing you to reclaim your garden.
